Being “happy” is easy,
we’re told this all the time.
All you have to do is forget,
that’s the key tenet,
not food, not sex, not joy,
absolutely no connection.
Forget about your worry,
and the aching in your mind,
the gnawing feeling that something,
is teetering on the line.
Forget cascading bills,
multiplying overdraft fees,
student loans, repo men,
oh lord, have mercy.
Forget the existence of,
rapists, paedophiles, murderers,
and all the twisted individuals,
untouched by law, roaming the world.
Forget about wars,
brought to light for a week,
by our holy media outlets,
who we reverently believe.
Forget that our leaders,
with more than one screw loose,
are corrupt, ignorant, disconnected,
no moral code, so to speak.
Forget that our planet,
torn apart limb by limb,
is burning, shattering and crumbling,
all on the capitalist whim.
Forget the animals,
creatures big and small,
with soul, heart and mind,
shredded into mcdonalds.
Forget the abundant flora,
maintaining us and everything,
cut down, set fire,
block out the cries of nature.
Forget our friends and family,
whichever ones you might appreciate,
the love you have still runs deep,
think of birthdays, days out, good times,
the only way I can sleep.
Forget our own emotions,
repress love, tears and passion,
throw shade in every direction,
so that we don’t have to listen.
Forget what we can be,
intelligent, caring, compassionate,
an unfathomable existence,
one organism from a whole,
trapped in a societal prison.
If you can do that and keep going,
then life will be sublime.
Being happy is easy,
when you’re,
despondent, ignorant, unable,
mute, deaf, and blind.
…right?
